About GP STEP
Global Pediatric-STEP is a non-profit that innovates and provides affordable surgical technology to pediatric surgeons in underserved areas of the world. Our goal is to better equip and educate physicians so that they can sustancivably care for their patients and children with complex surgical diseases.
Executive Board
Philip K. Frykman, MD, PhD, MBA

Dr. Philip K. Frykman is a pediatric surgeon in Southern California who founded Pacific Coast Pediatric Surgery in 2018. Prior to 2018, he was Associate Professor of Pediatric Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he ran an NIH-funded laboratory. Dr. Frykman specializes in minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures) for infants and children.

An internationally recognized leader in the field of pediatric surgery, Dr. Frykman’s research has improved the diagnosis/surgical treatment anorectal malformations and Hirschsprung disease. Dr. Frykman was one of principal inventors of the Frykman-Kimble Muscle Stimulator. Having led multiple pediatric surgical missions to China, Dr. Frykman’s has a breadth of experience working in underserved corners of the world.
Keith J. Kimble, MD

Dr. Keith J. Kimble is Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Kimble specializes in pediatric anesthesia and handling uncommon pediatric diseases.

Recognized for his publications and research, Dr. Kimble is a specialist in administering anesthesia to infants and children. Dr. Kimble was one of the principal inventors of the Frykman-Kimble Muscle Stimulator. A participant in multiple pediatric surgical missions in China, El Salvador, and Ecuador Dr. Kimble has a wealth of experience conducting medical procedures in places with dire need and few resources.
David Sheer

Mr. Sheer spent 40 years working in the corporate private sector. Retired as Chief Executive Officer of the largest industrial paper provider in the eastern United States, Mr. Sheer is an expert in corporate sales and financial administration. Mr. Sheer’s leadership experience covered a variety of industries including manufacturing, professional services, international sales, and financial consulting.

Mr. Sheer brings a steady hand implementing the organizational strategy for GP STEP and laying the institutional foundations for the growth of the mission.
Dr. Joshua Train, PhD

Dr. Joshua Train, is an electrical engineer, specializing in network architectures and satellite systems for the aerospace industry.
​
With extensive experience in project management and technology innovation, Dr. Train is heavily involved in GP STEP’s technology development and deployment, including the FK Stimulator. Born and raised in Bolivia, Dr. Train brings substantial knowledge on how to work and operate in underserved parts of the world.
